The Stoeps in Cradock

Ah Cradock........for the past ten years, every October, the family have been making the trip down to the historical town of Cradock to take part in the Fish River Canoe Marathon.  And like all things that are great, the excitement starts to build a few days before we leave. We have come to know the little town well, where to find the best Karoo lamb, the best biltong, the best places to eat and stay.

Cradock dates back to 1818 and although the town is not huge, a lot of the houses have these fabulous stoeps (verandas). In Market street there are the Victorian era craftsmen houses know as the "Tuinhuise" which have been restored oh so wonderfully well.

After the end of day 1 of the marathon, we decided to take a drive up and down the street to get some photos of these stoeps. And it's not long before I am jumping out the car and walking from one side of the street to the other, you just can't help yourself, all I can imagine is sitting on one of them watching life go by with a glass of chilled white wine....hum!

Oh..and by the way, encase you didn't know, it's said that Olive Shreiner wrote the book "The story of an African Farm" on a farm in the district.
